Rolling away aches & pains

The human muscular system and its characteristics sum up the benefits of myofascial release with Blackroll, which is increasingly supported by scientific research and a wide range of therapists and treatments.

fitness and wellnessWorking out with Blackroll has been established in functional training, performance sports and the manual therapeutic industry for some time, and has now arrived in more countries and sectors. Blackroll offers people of all ages and sport levels the possibility to improve their flexibility, balance, mobility and strength by doing simple exercises and performing self-massage.

The muscular system functions, and is basically held together, because of an important but often overlooked tissue: the fascia. Collectively this connective tissue, which surrounds and interpenetrates every muscle, bone, nerve and organ, comprises a three-dimensional full body “catsuit” that provides a network of support and structure for the body.

The fascia has a huge influence on how we move, our posture, our perception of pain and the muscular system. It is these elements of the body where myofascial release focuses on to prevent muscle ache and improve recovery of the muscles to eventually increase physical mobility, flexibility, and thereby our performance.

Comparing the fascia to the function of a sponge may help wrap your head around this function of the human connective tissue. The fascia (connective tissue, surrounding every muscle, bone, nerves, organs, joints – and connecting and supporting all of our bodily content) is a “tensional fluid system”. When we compare our fascia to a sponge, it is fairly easy to understand why fascia is important to take care of.

‘Happy’ fascia

When a sponge dries out, it becomes brittle and hard. It can easily be broken with only a little force because of how crisp it has become. However, when a sponge is wet and well hydrated it gets springy and resilient. You can crush it into a little ball, but release your grip and it bounces back. You can wring it or twist it, but it is difficult to break.

Once we understand that we’re like that on the inside, keeping our fascia hydrated takes on more importance. Our mobility, integrity and resilience are determined in large part by how well hydrated our fascia is.

In fact, what we call “stretching a muscle” is actually the fibres of the connective tissue (collagen) gliding along one another on the mucous-like proteins called glycos amino glycans (GAGs for short). GAGs, depending on their chemistry, can glue layers together when water is absent, or allow them to skate and slide on one another when hydrated.

This is one of the reasons most injuries are fascial. If we get “dried out” we are more brittle and are at much greater risk of erosion, tear or muscle rupture. Hydrating the fascia is done by moving your body and massage of the deep fascial tissue, with the help of Blackroll. A hydrated fascia is a happy fascia!

Self myofascial release (SMR), is an effective technique to ease tension and adhesions in the muscles and its surrounding fascia. Blackroll offers qualitative tools with various densities to target these tensions, providing an intense massage of the muscles and fascia, which has the same effect as a sports massage. Except with Blackroll, you decide exactly what part of your body needs more attention.

Myofascial release

Injuries from overuse, inflammation or even surgery can cause the fascia to scar or harden, which will give you that unwelcome stiff feeling, restricting the body to be optimally mobile and flexible. Through self-massage, hydration of the fascia is stimulated and will improve and restore the range of (joint) motion, reduce and prevent muscle ache and improve recovery of the muscles to eventually increase physical mobility, flexibility and thereby performance.

Experts from sports and medicine recommend the use of Blackroll. It can be used for all exercises (like other foam rollers) and offers a variety of different grades of hardness. All its rolls are harder than the average foam roller to guarantee a strong and deep massage effect and fascial release.

Dr. Robert Schleip, Director of Fascia Research Project at the University of Ulm, in Germany says, “The possibility to moderate the pressure by using different techniques of relief allows us a wide range of therapeutic use. Detailed tests with patients show excellent results.”

Dr. Stefan Grau, a sports medicine expert in Tubingen University, Germany says, “With just one tool we are able to do an effective myofascial full body workout, dynamic mobilization, balance optimization, strength training and acceleration of recovery.”

Dr. Peter Bornhäuser another sports medicine specialist, recommends it not only to sportspersons but also to those who have painful muscle tension caused by prolonged sitting and bad posture.

Blackroll is the ideal supplement to traditional methods of treatment, such as physiotherapy, osteopathy and massage. With Blackroll it is possible to also perform exercises that aim at balance, stability and mobility of the body.

The use of Blackroll

  • significantly increases the flexibility, mobility and performance of the muscular system
  • prevents muscle pain and avoid typical injuries and muscle damage resulting from overuse
  • specifically targets regeneration of the muscles and increase blood circulation
  • improves posture by balance work and strengthening of your client’s core
  • stimulates more nutrient-rich blood to circulate, soothing the skin’s appearance and reducing cellulite.

  • Redness, swelling & acute pain relating to muscles
  • Bone fractures, thromboses & acute lumbago
  • Osteoporosis, joint replacements & pregnancy
  • Spinal injuries/ spinal disk degeneration & rheumatic conditions
  • Patients on anti-coagulant (blood thinning) medicine
  • Fibromyalgia & presence of tumours

In all such cases, your clients must first consult their doctors/ physiotherapists.

Using Blackroll before and after your clients’ training, or just to start up your own day, will not only improve their/your sport performance but also posture and therefore overall well-being by experiencing relief from pain and stiffness.

To achieve this, Blackroll produces various roll-out tools to work with, using your client’s body weight and strength to prepare and regenerate his/her muscular system and improve blood circulation. This not only gets him/her warmed but, it also improves oxygen and nutrient-rich blood flow and can help benefit the heart and the body’s muscles and arteries.

The skin, which reflects a person’s energy level and health, will benefit as well, because increased blood circulation will fasten the removal of metabolic wastes and toxins from the cells.
